Chilblains [Feb. 22nd, 2012|10:55 am]
Tony Grist
Ailz has chilblains. I thought that's what they were- and now her podiatrist confirms it. I have them too, I think, though I haven't had them diagnosed. Chilblains are caused by nerves getting themselves frozen to death, so we need to work harder at keeping our feet warm.

We spend much of the day in a room with an unreconstructed wood floor. Very picturesque, very draughty. I've imported a mat from the front room (where it's not needed) to cover up some of the gaps between the boards.

I was also advised to keep whole leg warm (or arm for finger chilblains). Also, don't move from a warm room to a cold one - try to keep an even temperature - and, if you get very cold, warm the limb gradually
My home is probably smaller than yours, so I can keep the whole house at an even temperature - and add a thick jumper and tights - and I haven't had chilblains since I moved here, although they've been a nightmare all my life

That's good advice.

Our house is big and rambly, though not as draughty as it once was. We've been trying to keep the heating bills down- which probably accounts for the chilblains.
