Brands I'm Happy To Endorse [Aug. 28th, 2010|10:14 am]

Ruth took us out to lunch at a Chef and Brewer pub. There's a set menu- which seems to hold good across the franchise- but there's more going on in the kitchens than the whipping of pre-prepared platters out of deep freeze and into the microwave. Ruth and I both had rump of lamb. She ordered hers medium rare and I ordered mine well done- and both arrived at the table exactly so. We had mussels for starters- and it was all very good. I'd go again.

We bought a copy of Rose Macaulay's Crewe Train on Amazon, sight unseen and cave emptor. It turned out to be the 1938 Penguin edition. It's not rare or valuable (I've checked) but there's something rather cool about a cheap paperback that's still in readable condition after 72 years.  I also love the look of it.  Alan Lane wanted something clean and unfussy for his new brand- and his scratched-together team came up with a design classic. Apparently the famous logo was achieved by sending an office junior along to London Zoo with a sketchbook.

I was looking only yesterday at rump of lamb in the farm shop - pondering the pros and cons of deliciousness against overeating against less deliciousness if eaten as leftovers

The thing to do with leftover lamb is to curry it.

I'd have said that once - no longer!
