White Weather [Jan. 7th, 2010|10:29 am]
Tony Grist

We took the Christmas tree down yesterday afternoon. Odi was supposed to be coming to help us, but she's not going to be wanting to heave a push chair through all this snow. The cardboard box in which we've kept the decorations for years had had its corners nibbled away by rabbits, so we binned it and replaced it with a plastic one.

The temperature must have dropped well below freezing last night. The pipes in the kitchen are frozen (again) and there are icicles along the eaves.

I know we're well into a new decade, but I don't feel it yet. This white weather makes everything a little unreal- a little dreamlike- as if time itself had been frozen.

Yes. The unreality of it, plus the difficulty of going out in it. I feel cocooned.

We're going to have to go out today or we'll run out of food.

Yes, another nod to this. I was supposed to be working from home most of this week anyway, so theoretically nothing has changed. But despite that, I am finding it very difficult to concentrate, because it is hard to believe that real life will ever re-start again - and if that's the case, what's the point in marking all these essays?

I can't decide whether I like it or not- this state of semi-suspended animation.

I would, if I weren't simultaneously aware that real life is going to start up again with a vengeance next week. I could quite happily just sit with a mug of something hot and muck around on LJ this week... but I'm sure I will curse myself for having even dared to think so by this time next week!

We're close to running out of food- as are the in-laws, so we're going to have to enter the real world this afternoon. I've just been outside, digging the car out of hibernation.

You might want to be prepared for post-apocalyptic conditions in your local supermarket, then. I went to mine yesterday, and they had almost no milk, bread or fresh vegetables. Either their supply chains are being disrupted by the snow, or people are panic-buying (or both).

Thanks for the warning. But if they don't have bread, I'll settle for cake.

I'm sort of hoping for remaindered Christmas pudding.

Just watch out for angry mobs threatening to chop your head off on the way home, then! :-)

It's hard to believe how long this weather has been lasting.
We're going to get hit with the cold wave today and already the temperatures are plummeting. We may even have one of the unusual frosts we get occasionally in Seville. I'll have to cover up some especially frost sensitive plants tonight.

Even with no snow all this rain has felt like suspended animation here as well.

I don't know when we last had a cold spell that lasted so long. Usually in Britain the snow melts within days.

You describe the winter feeling very well -- "a little unreal...as if time itself had been frozen".

And it goes on and on. This is turning out to be a very long dream....
