I love the church graveyards in England. Mossy, crumbling stones always seem very fitting to me.

I've always thought it was a huge mistake when the Victorians abandoned crumbly local stone for fancy Italian marble.

And while there are some incredible Victorian monuments in marble, I totally agree with you.

It's a fascinating building. The earlier parts of it- which are Norman- are built with brick salvaged from the Roman city of Verulamium

That is very beautiful, the angle and the cathedral itself.

Gorgeous shot! The lights and shadow, and mix of shapes, are really nice.

I love St. Albans cathedral: the mix of styles from one end to the other, the frescoes, the pillars, etc etc etc. Beautiful and serene and entirely itself.

It was rather fun to go from there to the Roman ruins and museum. Lovely stuff in both places. I don't know if we'll ever go back, as the friend who used to live there has moved, but it was a marvelous visit.

We seem to have gotten into the habit of visiting St Albans on the way to my mother's. If we set off early we arrive there just about in time for lunch. Next time we do this we really must go to the Verulamium museum.
