Useless [Dec. 15th, 2005|12:45 pm]
Tony Grist

It's embarrassing- I just had to email Judy and ask her for her address. This is someone I exchange emails with every day- and I don't know where she lives. Of course, I used to know. I've been in possession of bits of paper with her address scrawled accross the top, but where are they now? Maybe they're buried in the random drifts of paper that lie about the house like untimely snow or maybe they've been shredded.

I'm terrified of throwing papers away for fear of losing important bits of information, but, wotthehell, the important bits of information get lost anyway. Why don't I keep an address book? That's a very good question.

I think I must be in love with this feckless persona of mine. I don't keep a record of addresses, I can't remember telephone numbers (Including my own), I have a wallet full of silly plastic cards that I can't use because I don't know the PIN numbers.

All this could be rectified.

But it's endearing, isn't it? Poor helpless little fellow. It gets me mothered.

The web is my address book. That, and my cellphone for phone numbers. I'd be lost without them.

I recently went on a rampage and threw out all my phonebooks--but then I discovered that when you are trying to find categories of things, like furniture stores, the web sucks. So when my new Yellow Pages arrived, I put it in a place of honor. But I recycled the white pages.

For PIN numbers, I hear you. If I can't set them myself, I can't remember them.

I never look in the phone book. I guess I use The Yellow Pages once or twice a year- and Joe likes to keep to hand so he can order himself kebabs.

I keep an address book (you're in it, Tony!) But there are some important people whose addresses I don't have...

The Web isn't great for phone numbers yet - but there hav been a couple of times I've found school numbers and things like that for my profs....

Why do you think the web isn't great for phone numbers? In the US it sure is, for both people and businesses. And you can backtrack phone numbers on Google.
