Full Stops [Aug. 24th, 2020|09:29 pm]
Tony Grist
I noticed recently that I've a developed a reluctance to close any piece of writing with a full stop, preferring, where it isn't obviously ridiculous, to go "..." I'd thought it was just me being quirky but this morning's paper had a piece explaining how and why full stops are going out of fashion. It's a product of messaging- where the individual's contribution is so often part of an open, free form conversation- and interrupting the flow with punctuation can appear (and often is) egotistical and rude. A full stop suggests that the last word has been said- which is never actually the case. It's like going "End of"- and cutting off all further discussion.

It's always good to know one's in tune with the spirit of the age....

Hm... I actually had to ask the dictionary about what you actually mean in here...
I don't know - my biggest problem is that my brain unlearned to express something with words in a pointedly but short manner. So a full stop is kind of essential in my writing. (But therefore instead, I tend to use the semicolon ; which barely anyone seems to use in the English language...)

I use semi-colons occasionally, but, you're right; they're deeply unfashionable.

Hm, I'd guess in times without punctuation, too few people know how to use them correctly...

You aren't.

(*Ducks and runs because it really isn't very nice to be bratty like that, even because it was a straight line waiting to be taken up...*)

The times are out of joint. I shall continue to use full stops, semicolons and whatever other punctuation seems appropriate to me.

Yes, but usage is changing all the time.

I tend to use more commas than is currently fashionable, but full stops are essential. You can't express yourself without having them. Although there are some annoying people that can babble on without drawing a breath you still have compartmentalise what you are saying. Now and again I find comments on YouTube and elsewhere that are a paragraph long, but manage to omit all capital letters or punctuation. I find that very annoying. The pity is, the post is usually well considered and composed, so why hasn't the person used them?
It's just lazy. A pause can make or break a conversation but that is more difficult to convey in written text.
