Norwich Roof Boss #5 [Sep. 11th, 2019|09:03 am]
Tony Grist

This is one of my favourites.

The musician on the left is playing a cittern. And the one on the right? I think what they're holding is a bladder pipe or bagpipe- and that the carving has been damaged, then restored and painted misleadingly to make it seem as if the bag is a rigid form with its flat, smooth face towards the viewer. The giveaway is the chanter poking out at the bottom.

I do love this one. I looked up some of my own photos of the bosses and this is one I have and like a lot. And I think you're right about the bagpipe.

A DW friend has suggested the mystery instrument is a vielle- and the ambiguity arises because the person who painted it (probably last century) was uninformed about medieval music and left out the strings and bridge. The situation might be clearer if we hadn't lost the musician's right arm.

I second the vielle theory --- it looks like one to me, more so than a bagpipe, although I think bagpipe is also a reasonable guess.

I'm a convert. Someone needs to repaint it so it looks right.

Actually someone needs to repaint the whole collection. The old paint is fading and flaking and looking quite shabby.
