A Thaxted Gargoyle [Aug. 29th, 2019|08:17 pm]
Tony Grist
Simon Knott- the East Anglian churches man- reckons to visit 15 churches by bike on a good day; I've visited something like that many- by car- in three days- and I'm exhausted. I haven't sorted through my pictures yet, but here's one, chosen more or less at random. It shows one of the many gargoyles and other grotesques that adorn the exterior walls of St John's, Thaxted- one of the loveliest churches in England.

The gargoyle is gorgeous, but the spout looks like a repurposed automobile tailpipe.

And so it does.

But for all I know this might be how it looked in the middle ages...

That's a good point. IIRC there's evidence that at least some medieval gargoyles had long spouts, intended to direct the outflow to specific locations.
