Finishing Unfinished Business

40 years ago I left home vowing, "Never again." I put down roots in a city 200 miles away and only ever went back for short visits. For many years the crossing of my parents threshold brought me down with a migraine.

But now here I am again, living the old life (with differences- like I've got Ailz with me) immersed in the polite routines and pieties that used to drive me up the wall when I was a kid. Little demons keep popping their little heads out of the flowerbeds and I set my teeth and grin at them until they go away.

Saturn Over The Water: J.B. Priestley

A lively, continent-hopping, Cold War thriller- fully of sharply sketched characters and vividly painted landscapes- which turns a bit cosmic towards the end. I went through a phase of reading Priestley in my mid 20s. Now- in my early 60s- I feel like going through another.

Irises

A long slow Sunday afternoon like those of my boyhood. I slept through much of it. The horrors almost got the better of me at tea-time so I went and photographed irises.

I'm feeling better now. Just see how blue they are...

Irises

The TV is tuned to BBC 1 and Songs of Praise which is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty's Coronation. My parents and grandparents were Royalists. I'm a Cromwellian.
