On The Day Notre Dame Burned [Apr. 15th, 2019|08:22 pm]
Tony Grist
I made myself a sort of a promise at the beginning of the year that'd I'd write something in the blog every day. It wasn't exactly a New Year's Resolution but I've kept it better than I've ever kept one of those. That's really the only reason I'm writing this- to keep faith with myself and to ensure there's no blank space in the calendar. I've been running with grandchildren for two days now and I've (a) much too much to say and (b) no energy left for saying it.

I see Notre Dame de Paris is on fire. I wonder what it means. It must mean something. Great historic buildings don't just combust randomly.

The news report said the people who were working on it misstepped...there was a spark in the scaffolding.

Got to know it at about half past seven and I was like "WTF?!! You gotta be kidding?!!".
...During the first hour the fire was on the live news reports, you could literally watch the roof of the cathedral melt away under the flames. It burned like bone-dry straw.

They called he roof of Notre Dame "le foret" because there was so much wood up there.

I finally saw the tweet.

he was trying to give advice
from when he was in california
telling them they didn't rake enough
and proved he didn't know qwack there too.

there they fill the cargo of planes from the ocean
and dump it with fire retardant on the fire in forests.
doing that would have decimated
the architecture people were trying to save.

sadly there had been on order planes
of a greater magnitude for fighting forest fires
and that was canceled when he took office.
then we had massive fires
the larger planes would have been perfect for.

ignore the fat man
when he's on script he's bad
when he gets a hold of his fone
he's worse.

The fact they were re-leading the roof and the structure is stone laid over wood explains a lot, but oh, those beautiful rose windows.

The latest report says the rose windows have been saved. I hope that's the case.

It's very sad but so many of these fires happen when the building is "under restoration". Someone leaves a heater on that overloads, temporary wiring shorts out etc. The root cause is usually something minor but the results are catastrophic. The Glasgow School of Art was another recent disaster.

Getting the restorers in is a gamble.

Such sad news. I heard about it on Radio 4 on the way into work.

(Though when they started interviewing the French amabassador, I had to switch off the radio before I fell asleep at the wheel. Oh, my goodness. I think the French must have chosen him as a revenge for Brexit - I've never heard anyone drone on in such a boring monotone...)

I don't suppose the ambassador knew anything more than anyone else. After all, he wasn't on the scene.
