So, Decimus Burton, We Meet Again [Apr. 14th, 2019|08:36 am]
Tony Grist
We're staying on a dairy farm between Garstang and Lancaster- with miniature goats in a paddock at the bottom of the garden path. The sea is only a few miles away and yesterday morning we went looking for it. The road ran parallel to the coast but we couldn't find any turnings that led to it, so we drove on and on until we ran out of land at the end of the Wyre peninsula in a place called Knot End- and there it was. Sort of. Because apart from the odd pool and the trickle in the estuary-there wasn't any water- just the seemingly limitless sands of Morecambe Bay.

Knot End is on the other side of the river from Fleetwood- a town which is largely the work of my old friend the neo-classical architect Decimus Burton who made such a success of St Leonards. See how elegant it is! The long barrack-like building is Queens Terrace and the sticky-up thing is one of his two lighthouses.

Makes me think of St Petersburg. If I were filming a great Russian novel I might well consider using Fleetwood as a location.

That looks very grand. Not what I would have expected of Fleetwood, though I haven't every been there so probably have a totally false impression of the place.

I can't say I know it well.

In fact I took this picture not knowing it was Fleetwood I was looking at. The penny only dropped after I consulted the map.

Hallo! I don't use LJ much, these days, and I couldn't find you, last time I looked in - how are you?

I'm fine. We live in Kent these days. At present we're on a week's vacation, visiting family in the north.

And you?

Impressive!

No chimneys on the right hand side of the building - I wonder why?

I presume the chimneys are original- and can only think the two halves of the building have different owners and the people on the right hand side decided to take theirs down.
