Hostile Environment [Dec. 23rd, 2018|09:01 am]
Tony Grist
Driving in and out of London you get accosted at major intersections by people walking down the lines of waiting cars holding out little plastic cups.

Fancy doing that for a day. And then day after day. In winter too. Begging is hard work.

And essentially harmless. You're causing the world less grief than you would if you worked in one of those cold-calling centres. Or, indeed, at lots of other "proper" jobs. Investment banking, for instance...

The two guys we had dealings with yesterday were youngish men; they looked tired and unhappy. I think they were probably Eastern European- so not only on the streets but on the streets of a strange town.

Of course we gave them money.

One of the councils in Dorset introduced a £1,000 fine for begging on the street. Unbelievable. The beggars would have to beg in order to pay it... Hostile environment, indeed.

I usually give money. I don't think anyone would chose to spend their days sitting all day in the cold on concrete if they had some better way of earning money. And I don't care if they do spend the money on alcohol or drugs, because if I was in their situation, who knows if I wouldn't do the same?

Though I never give money to aggressive beggars who come up and start giving me a spiel - I don't reward intimidating behaviour.

My thoughts exactly.
