Cromwell's Soldiers Mutilate A Church [Nov. 26th, 2018|10:43 am]
Tony Grist
In 1964- shortly after my 13th birthday- I was presented with a copy of Joan Selby-Lowndes' Your Book of The English Church as a reward for "good conduct and attendance" by the Sunday School teacher at St Mary's Hadlow. I lost track of it a long time ago- probably at the time of the divorce- but yesterday we were at Becky's- and she had found it among her books and was happy to present it to me all over again.

The best thing about it are the line illustrations by John Turner. Here's one I particularly like.

What fun they're having!

That's a very obedient horse helping out with the iconoclasm...

As a warhorse I suppose it's used to all the banging and crashing.

It sort of makes me mad. But history is like that.

It makes me think of Lichfield cathedral- which was besieged during the Civil War. They had snipers on the towers and cannon drawn up against it. By the time the action was over the building still stood but almost all its adornment- painting, sculpture, glass- had gone. Few medieval cathedrals were so completely denuded.
