Tick, Tick [Oct. 14th, 2018|09:10 am]
Tony Grist
The irregular tick-ticking coming from the tree line at the top of the field will be the sound of beech nuts bouncing off the great log that's lying there.

Ah, yes. The sounds of autumn. When I used to ride along the lanes at this time of year, I had the sound of acorns bouncing off my riding hat...

It's so quiet today that the slightest noise carries. It feels like the calm before the storm- but by all accounts storm Callum has spent its force and all we can expect is a little rain...

On a more exotic note, our Autumn sounds now include the raucous sound of small green parrots. They have arrived in our neighbourhood as they expand outside of the city in search of new territory. Sigh. The sounds of Autumn here used to the migratory flocks of sheep baaing.

London has small green parrots. Legend says the first pair was released into the wild by Jimi Hendrix. I've seen them in Bromley which is about twenty miles north of here- and am eagerly anticipating their arrival in our corner of Kent.

They are an invasive species and are wreaking havoc with our eco-systems and native fauna and flora. They are Monk Parakeets or Quaker Parrots (same thing)and they are devastating fruit crops here and driving away native birds who nest in tree trunks and crevices, thereby interfering with breeding of native species which are starting to fall in numbers. They're exotic to see but truly a pest here.
