The Downs School As Was [Aug. 31st, 2018|08:35 am]
Tony Grist
My mother: Why are you going to Seaford?

Me: Because we like it. Don't you?

My mother: No. I was sent away to school there.

The English middle and upper classes for many generations thought it was advantageous and altogether the done thing to send their children away to boarding school. God knows why. And it still goes on....

My mother's school was called The Downs; it closed in 1964. We drove past the site on our way into town. It is now occupied by flats (housed in the old buildings) and a leisure centre.

This. This is why I don't revisit Brighton (a perfectly nice place where I might otherwise quite like to live) if I can possibly help it.

I don't revisit Lancing, but I used to escape into the countryside round about and it's left me with a love of the Sussex Downs.

Yes, I like the Downs too! In more recent years they've been the location of many happy motorcycle trips.
