Autumnal [Aug. 23rd, 2018|10:15 am]
Tony Grist
"You can tell it's autumn," says Ailz. "You've got your autumn hat on."

It's a broad brimmed felt hat, plum coloured. I bought it in Hythe last year- or was it the year before? Anyway, it's too hot for summer. In summer I wear a hat that looks like its made of straw but is actually made of paper- that is if I wear a hat at all.

It's true about autumn. We seem to have moved very quickly from a record-breaking heatwave to the weather we have at present-  still warm most of the time, but changeable. It rained quite hard this morning. The grass, which was suppressed by the heatwave is growing again.  Our nearest neighbour down on the Maidstone road has been burning his garden waste and the smoke has been blowing our way- and that's an autumn smell. The other day in Lewes I bought Victoria plums from a stall on the High Street.

I actually started a small fire yesterday evening to take the chill off the air before going to bed.

We've been putting the central heating on- not so much for ourselves, but for my mother.

Seems similar in Central Europe.
The really hot temperatures - it seems like some zenith had been crossed over. It won't be 35°C anymore. You'll still get your 30 degrees with a little bit of plus on top potentially, but the forecasts that are made now seem like the desert climate and the typical air accompanying it is gone for this year. The time's simply over.
(Well, now there'd only be the missing rain...)

Autumn is but a dream here. It's still 38-39 although the shorter daylight hours make it a wee bit more tolerable. We have to wait another month at least before any real signs of autumn happen.
