Win-Win [Jul. 9th, 2018|08:21 am]

"B" says she likes her work as a carer because old people have interesting stories to tell and aren't competitive and don't put you down.

I'm not sure whether she thinks of Ailz and me as "old people" but I suspect she does. We don't need helping to the toilet yet but we've been around for nearly half a century longer than she has.

For my part I like dealing with the young because- well- they're young.

I have a friend who spent two years as a carer for a very elderly woman who was apparently very unkind and critical. And then there are the carers who commit elder abuse. I like to think those are the exceptions and that there is a natural balance between old and young.

My mother's carers have clients they like and others they don't. "B" was talking about a client's husband who badgers her to do chores she's not actually contracted to do.
