Father Time [May. 11th, 2018|10:36 am]
Tony Grist

Figure of Father Time from the monument to Dame Ann Henniker in Rochester cathedral.

The sculptor is Thomas Banks and the medium not marble as you might think but Coade Stone- a ceramic with hard-wearing properties- perfected in the late 18th century and used mainly for garden statuary and architectural ornament.

It really does look like marble! That is amazing and I like the way the lines flow. It's a powerful looking sculpture.

I wouldn't have known it wasn't marble- and I got up close to it. Coade stone had quite a vogue in the late 18th-early 19th century. The Coade Company went out of business in 1833 and the recipe for its product was lost for well over 100 years.
