Yellow Flower [May. 10th, 2018|11:06 am]
Tony Grist

Is this a magnolia?

Whatever it is I congratulate it on its sculptural qualities.

My mother would once have known what everything in the garden was but now she asks me- and though I find I know more than I thought I did I've never been a plantsman...

Yellow iris I think. Magnolia grows from a shrub to a tree and the flower is whitish to pink.
Nice picture.

Ah, but this is a shrub...

And it looks a lot like the things we have in the garden that I know to be magnolias.

I would say from the look of it that it is some kind of lily, but I don't know that much about flowers and plants, either.

It does look like a lily- but it can't be because it's growing on a large shrub. I need to do some googling....

Azalea maybe? They tend to come in yellow and orange...

But it's lovely, whatever it is.

I think azalea is very likely.

I have never seen a yellow magnolia and if it's a shrub I'm not sure at all. It is absolutely lovely whatever it is. And it's definitely very lily-like. If I saw the leaves it might be easier to figure out what it is.

PS I was wrong. There are yellow magnolias but their sexual organs look very different from this.

Magnolias seem to come in most colours- but, you're right about the sexual organs.

I would say a daylily, especially if each flower only lasts one day, two at most, but if they last longer, then it is still a lily.

It does look like a lily- but it can't be because it grows on a shrub. I'm currently leaning towards azalea.

Definitely not an azalea.

That looks very much like it. I think we have a positive identification.

Might I suggest this handy tool? https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/search-form

I was just doing a casual search myself because you piqued my interest, but I didn't have enough information for a proper search. Good luck in solving your horticultural mystery! :-)

Thank you. That's helpful.

I'm currently leaning towards azalea.
