Spring Flowers And Easter Hymns And Dead People [Apr. 1st, 2018|09:04 am]
Tony Grist
An early memory:

Attending an Easter morning service at a little old whitewashed church on the Sussex Downs- with spring flowers on the ledges and sunshine in the windows- singing hymns with lots of alleluias in them and being vaguely concerned about what would happen if the Last Trump were to sound and all the dead people in the churchyard came out of their graves....

I always sang in the church choir, from junior choir to senior choir to Chancel choir. I was just thinking today that I loved singing "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" but I never was there for the religious part of it. It was the music.

I never made it into any choir.

At one school concert I was told to stand and the back and mime because my singing was so bad.

Easter wad alwaysa day of glorious, resounding music. I loved that aspect as a child after the oppressive feeling of Lent.

My favourite season for Church music is Advent.

Mine, too. And I must remind myself not to type replies on my phone because I make far too many typos.

I wonder if I'd seen Spencer's Cookham Resurrection by then. I might have done. My mother took us to galleries from a very young age.
