Frozen Solid [Feb. 26th, 2018|10:30 am]
Tony Grist

The water in the bird bath has frozen solid.

It reminds me of the time- back in the 1950s- when our next door neighbour's goldfish pond did the same. One didn't like to ask what exactly had become of the fish, but she did remark- later in the year- that although the fish had gone- the pondweed and waterlilies were flourishing like never before. She was related by marriage to Thomas Hardy- his sister-in-law to be exact- and one can imagine him turning the incident into one of his grimly humorous "satires of circumstance".

That is really solid! It rather looks like a piece of ancient almost but not quite translucent glass.

We're going through a cold spell. Snow showers with sunny interludes. The temperature is just above freezing.

That takes me back!

I could always measure how hard the frost was by the depth of ice in the ponies' water buckets... If a gentle kick broke the ice, it was a mild frost. If your foot bounced off the bucket, or the bucket shattered, it was a hard frost.

That reminds me- I need to go check the horses's water butts.

The children at school (4 and 5 yr olds) where absolutely delighted with the ice in their mud kitchen this morning. It almost made it the freeze worth if for the rest of us.

Children have the right idea. Bless 'em.
