I looked across the lawn without my glasses and saw a figure dressed like a ninja leaning against the angle of the neighbour's walled garden apparently observing the house. I went and fetched my glasses and saw it was one of the carers- dressed in her motorcycle leathers- enjoying a roll-up before coming on duty....|
That would have made me do a double take as well!
We live in a rural enclave, and there are no passers-by, so anybody who shows up is here for a reason.
There's a wonderful piece by Thurber on the things one sees without glasses on. I once saw a white rabbit on the second storey windowsill of the office opposite mine (it turned out to be some milk keeping cool in a plastic bag).
Thurber: you don't come across his name that much these days- but he was very famous when I was a kid.
I can't remember how I discovered him, but he's so funny, yet so gentle and inoffensive; he's one of my writing role models.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty might be my favourite short story in the world.
The film with Danny Kaye takes liberties with the original but is really quite good fun.
I'll try to catch it! Didn't much like the look of the recent film.
The Danny Kaye film messes with the story by having Mitty eventually become a real-life hero by thwarting a criminal plot. The only saving grace is that the criminal he thwarts is played by Boris Karloff.
Right, it's definitely on the list!
No- as in homemade cigarette.
