Richard Dawson [Jan. 16th, 2018|10:45 am]
Tony Grist
The sun is shining and I've just discovered the work of Richard Dawson- in particular tracks off his 2017 album Peasant. People in  medieval costume with mud on their faces dancing round a bonfire (the video to his song "Ogre) is entirely my sort of thing. He says he's influenced by the Sufis (not the band, the Islamic sect) and Mike Waterson- and the music is in the folk tradition (he's from Newcastle) but keeps doing spiky, odd, unexpected things. His prime instrument is a cheap acoustic guitar with nylon strings which sounded better after he broke it and put it back together again- which reads like a parable of all he's trying to do.

I was given Peasant for Christmas by my cousin, and I've been enjoying it very much while driving. The only thing it reminded me of (and that slightly) was Gryphon.

They were a good 70's folk group that used medieval instruments.

I have played the Dawson CD four times now - it grows on you and now i love it/
