More Garden Archaeology [May. 18th, 2017|11:06 am]
Tony Grist
The guys- Matthew and his guys- are in the process of putting new fencing in round the garden- and this object came out of one of the post holes they dug.

It seems to be made of glass- and was presumably part of some sort of decorative scheme. No, I don't think it's Roman (wish it were) but what on earth was it? We're getting lots of brick out of the same patch of ground so it's fairly obvious that there was once a building there, but- given that our property was never anything grander than a farm- it's unlikely to have been anything but a cowshed or a barn. Would a cowshed have had pretty walls or floors involving the use of sea-green glass tesserae? Doesn't seem likely, does it?

No, it doesn't seem likely for walls or but it might have been a bit of bottle or some such?

It's the wrong shape for a bottle. Also too thick. It has to be part of a tile or tessera I think.

Definitely modern, but worn. Perhaps it was moved there from its original setting, rather than being part of a cow byre because I cannot imagine anyone putting decorative glass tiles in a cowshed, no matter how fond of their cows they were.

I need to poke around a bit more in that area- and see what else is there.

What a marvelous mystery.

Sure is pretty. Maybe there were some lovely stepping stones, or a little outbuilding there once had a decorative mosaic floor, just cuz the now-long-dead farmer(s) had aesthetic sensibilities?

I'm imagining a tiled wall with decorative features. Would you put something like that into a milking shed?
