Day 5 [Jun. 18th, 2005|05:59 pm]
Tony Grist

Barcelona!

And, yes, we did a drive-by of some of the famous buildings by Antonio Gaudi. He's interesting, but I'm not a fan.I think he's only one step away from Disneyland.

And I don't like his religiosity.

We spent the afternoon at the Picasso Museum. I love Picasso. The museum contains a unique collection of his juvenilia- scratchy landscapes painted on the lids of cigar boxes, that sort of thing- and some stunning examples of his later work, including an overwhelming sequence of paintings from 1957 in which he measures himself against Velasquez's masterpiece, Las Meninas.

You know, I'm not entirely sure. We were following our guide who was taking us to see the remains of the temple of the Divine Augustus. We went into this dark passage, and then we passed through a tiny square courtyard, no more than a couple of paces across, which was open to the sky. I looked up and this is what I saw. I liked it enough to shoot this image and then I had to hurry on and join the rest of the party. I think those dark shapes in the walls are shuttered windows, but I haven't a clue what lies behind them.

Barcelona is amazing and we had about five hours to rush round it.

It was so intense I came away with a migraine....

kharin and I spent a week there in 2003. Too bad you only had five hours; sorry to hear about your migraine, but in many ways, hardly a surprise when you try to cram that much in. I've never understood the "morning in Oxford, afternoon in Stratford" thing. We had a day trip to Tarragona too, I wonder whether that's coming up in your travelogue?

I've never really understood it myself. But faced with a choice between 5 hours in Barcelona and no hours at all we chose the latter. The main object of the outing was to see the Picasso museum. It was the Picasso museum that sold the whole holiday to us. And it was great. In a sense everything else was a bonus.

No, we didn't get to Tarragona.:)

It's an open-air skylight. We plunged into this dark passage-way. It brightened. I looked up and this is what I saw.

I wish I could have had longer in the city. It was a mad rush to get round and see the little that we did.

I keep trying to figure out the black rectangles on the interesting fourth photograph. What on earth? You are surely shooting up at the sky, so are those air conditioners in apartments?

Air conditioners? Well, yes, they might be. I hadn't actually thought of that.

Five hours? That's an insult.

Have you read Robert Hughs' guide to the city?

Barely scratching the surface....

And I got a migraine- serves me right.

I like Hughes. I didn't know he'd got a book on Barcelona. I'd like to read it.
