Talking about market crosses and preaching crosses (I think the terms are interchangeable)...

...these two are in the market square at Sandbach, Cheshire (or West Mercia as it then was) They're 9th century or something like that...

Indeed. As were most things in the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque eras.
