Going Soft [Oct. 21st, 2015|11:26 am]
Tony Grist
Fine crop of fungus round the old chestnut tree. I've been admiring it but Matthew shakes his head and says it means the tree is going all soft and is ready to come down. Oh dear, I'll miss it.

There are two ways of doing this. Either we let nature take its course and risk the tree taking out a lot of other trees when it falls or Matthew does the job scientifically. No choice really.

Still, it'll be one hell of a bonfire.

Matthew may be right but I have crops like that around my 350 year old (more or less) olive tree and that tree is nowhere ready to die. Now if it were shelf fungus on the trunk itself...that means the tree is really dying or more likely dead.

The way Matthew tells it chestnut trees very quickly turn to mush- and this one could do a lot of damage if it were to fall of its own accord.
