A Rethink [May. 22nd, 2015|07:44 pm]
Tony Grist
But then again maybe we should move sooner rather than later and take my mother with us.

A woman who spends her days shuttling between the dinner table and her chair in front of the telly- and doesn't want to venture further- really has no use or need for the many acres she's sitting on here. She could be just as happy in a smaller property by the seaside, couldn't she?

Alright, if she's coming with us it would make sense to go for a bungalow, but I can compromise on the period fittings and ghosts...

There's a good chance she will be confused and unhappy, and will make you confused and unhappy, too.

If it looks fancy enough, or has a seaside view that makes it look like a vacation cottage, that by itself may be comforting.

My grandmother is in her late 90s, in a nursing home that used to be a fine mansion. She does not know where she is, but when she sees the marble fireplace, elegant furniture, and intricate moldings, she says that she must be doing well to be there.

My mother's cognition is deteriorating slowly but steadily. We'd be moving her to a comfortable place and she'd have her own things around her. I've no idea how she'd react to a move. There's really no way of finding out- except by doing it.

Yes, I know. It's risky. It could go horribly wrong.

Could you take her somewhere for a week or so and see how she reacts?

I'm pretty sure she'd hate it. I know we would. Also we'd have to take a full time carer with us to make it tolerable.
