Fading, Fading... [Mar. 29th, 2015|11:30 am]
Tony Grist
First thing this morning my mother found the plastic bag of advertising that came with yesterday's Telegraph- and went through it item by item.

"What's this?"

"Advertising"

"I don't know what this is."

"More advertising."

"What's this?"

"It's all advertising. Take my word for it."

"What's this?"

Well, you get the idea.

When she'd been through it all- and I'd removed the pile from sight so she didn't go throught it again- she gazed into her empty cereal bowl and asked, "What do I do now?"

*Sigh.* So hard for you and Ailz. But if she seems largely happy and content, you're doing it right.

Yes, she seems happy enough.

That's got to be disheartening.

It is. On the other hand it's what we expect.

Sad in some ways. But like Laura says, if she's happy it's ok though frustrating for you and Ailz.

Indeed. Roy's father was mostly a blank slate but a happy blank slate and that was relatively easy. His mother, on the other hand, didn't know who or where she was but knew something was very very wrong and cried most of the time.

Dealing with Roy's mother must have been truly awful.

Roy's parents lived in Florida and I rarely accompanied him down because of the expense. It was awful for him. Roy's father outlivedRoy's mother by a decade and was the principal caregiver until a nursing home was the only option. She lived a long time in a semi-vegatative state.

She goes through her daily routines, living in the moment and seems content. Happy would be pitching it too high, I think.

music maybe it time to listen to some music?

that seems a safe activity
since she sounds like she has all her hearing

at least you don' have to follow her on the roof
as she wants to clean the chimney?
she could want to go sky diving
or scooba diving

She's largely indifferent to music- and always has been. She's also very deaf these days.

oh well that would have been too easy

dad would have loved music
but the trashed his hearing

so its not an option for him either.
sigh proper "parenting" is just harder sometimes

content is good much better than
wandering around looking for you in the garden
and thinking you are a kid... and not finding you
that can't happen. sigh (nursing home job memories )

Oh, poor thing. What must be going on in her head.

I think she exists in the moment. Things happen and she promptly forgets all about them. She doesn't seem unhappy.

Have you seen the BBC2 series "Nurse"? It is both amusing and respectful.

I haven't- but I've read good things about it.
