What We Did On Our Day Off [Jan. 18th, 2015|11:06 am]
Tony Grist
The Croma pizzeria on the top floor of the Tunbridge Wells Odeon comes as a surprise. You expect it to be just another Pizza Hut or Domino's and it's considerably better than that. There's an open kitchen so you can watch the young staff hand-making the pizza dough- and the space- all glass and mirrors so it's glittery and hard to read- was designed by Enzo Apicella who (I googled him) has been famous since the '60s. Also they show old Hal Roach comedies on a big screen featuring Ben Turpin or Charlie Chase or the Little Rascals. Charlie Chase plays a Woosterish young cove and is rather endearing. Once in a while Stan Laurel and or Oliver Hardy show up, but never together because these were early days and they hadn't got together yet. Ollie is always the bully- his essential sweetness untapped.

We had meant to see Foxcatcher but there wasn't an afternoon showing, so we drove to Hastings took a look at the sea- which was silvery green in the sinking light- and drove home again, stopping on the way to get the car washed for the first time in six months.

Somehow, when I think of Kentish fare, I don't ordinarily think of pizza.

Also, I didn't realize you have Dominos and Pizza Hut, over there. How dreadful.

Oh yeah, those fast food places are everywhere.

I don't altogether hate them. There are times when a Domino's pizza or a packet of MacDonald's fries are just what I want. They're cheap too.

I have not eaten at a MacDonald's in fifteen years or more. I never liked it all that much and, at least these days around here, there are more attractive fast-food alternatives. It's probably been at least that long since I ate at Pizza Hut, though I was always rather fond of it, even if it was more reminiscent than exemplary of a decent pie. Didn't care for Domino's.

When I lived in California, as good as the food tended to be, those were the two things hardest to come by: good pizza and a good hamburger.

I used to take my kids to MacDonald's. They thought it was treat and it was one I could afford. I go back every once in a while. Last year, for example, we took Odi and the kids.
