Pausing To Draw Breath [Jul. 25th, 2014|09:06 am]
Tony Grist
Ailz asked me why I was late to bed and I told her I'd just finished Tess of the d'Urbervilles and needed time to wind down.

I think I'll wait a day or two before launching into Jude the Obscure.

From Tess straight to Jude? You're brave.

I can't ever imagine myself reading Jude the Obscure again.

Hardy is tough- not just because of the terrible things that happen to his people- but because he demands attention. He's a writer who packs his prose with meaning- blink and you'll miss a subtlety or a telling image. You can't skim read him.

He's also bloody good. Tess has to be one of the greatest novels ever written.
