Gay Marriage [Mar. 29th, 2014|03:50 pm]
Tony Grist
"What do you think of it?" my mother asks.

"All for it," I say, and make a clenched fist.

"But why?" She asks querulously.

"Different generation," I say.

Yes, that was a little tart of me, but I can't be bothered to explain the social history of the last half century to someone who was there but hasn't been paying attention.

It probably holds no relevancy to her. Unless she has gay friends or her friends have gay children, it's just something that is going on "out there".

I'm sure this is the case.

Still gets up my nose though.

Age does not explain or excuse entirely. My mom was for it 20 years ago-- when she was 80. My brother only has 10 years on me, and he is the one who has a problem with it. Not sure why.

Some people are open to new ideas and others are content to stick with the notions they were handed by their parents and teachers.

I spent Monday and Tuesday surrounded by 12 -15 year olds who think it is a terrible thing that should not be allowed to happen (poor, mostly immigrant kids in a Catholic school).

The Catholic spokesperson who was being interviewed on the World at One had a note of panic in her voice- as if she were actually afraid of gay people getting married.

The nuns at my school are comparatively benign, so have instructed the kids to pray for pooves, rather than actually stoning them. I think there is an undercurrent of fear.

Lots of the staff and nuns at my school are from developing countries, too, so there is an element of 'this is one of those things that shows the colonial west is just going to the bad and isn't to do with progress at all'.

Decline of the Roman Empire and all that.

I can understand the fear. You knock one brick out of the wall and you endanger the whole structure.

A wonder what she'd make of the fact that I, as a trans woman, finally got the right to marry a almost a decade ago and we've been married for almost eight years? :o)
