Chatting To Mike

I was saying to Mike (who's just back from Singapore- high tea at The Raffles and all that!) how I couldn't understand how anyone (meaning Ailz's mother) could take pleasure in making someone dance attendance on them against their will. And he said he could because bullies take pleasure in bullying. And I thought, Yes, of course; Nicely put. Sometimes it takes someone who's outside the situation to see it plainly for what it is. When your're caught up in a thing you're liable to over-analyse.

It's not about love- obviously not. And it's not about her wanting to see Ailz because it makes either of them happy- because all she ever does is moan. it's about the exercise of dominance.

Otherwise Mike and I were talking about the things the Japanese got up to during the War- and it all sort of hung together. He was saying how nice it was to be in a place where the Brits are seen as the good guys- the good colonialists anyway- because they were so much pleasanter than the japanese- and eventually returned as liberators. He's taking an interest in all that history- Japan, Britain, Singapore, Korea, Shanghai- so I suggested he might like to watch Tenko.

The revival of Japanese nationalism bothers him rather. I guess it should bother us all.
