The Colour: Rose Tremain

A solid, old-fashioned, richly detailed historical novel (about a gold rush in New Zealand in the 1860s) that slopes (without ever losing its grip on what we call realism) into otherworldliness and magic. I understand there's a movie in development. If they don't cast Hugh Jackman as Joseph Blackstone they'll be missing a trick.
