O, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside On A Miserable Weekday In February [Feb. 13th, 2018|06:21 pm]
Tony Grist
I thought Hastings out of season on a wintry Tuesday would be empty- but it wasn't. There were even school parties- probably from overseas- following their responsible adults around the Stade while the wind blew icy rain in their faces. We mostly stayed indoors. The place we went for lunch had been a cheap and cheerful café last time we ate there but is now- under the same management but after a refit- offering ambitious seafood dishes and a wine list. Three of us had seafood linguine. It's a long time- possibly decades- since I last peeled a prawn. After lunch we went to the Museum- and it was holding an activities day- and full of parents and kids- and the grandchildren spent twice as long there as we thought they'd manage.

Our seaside resorts tend to empty out in winter except for the islands and they tend to fill up with the elderly who are offered bargain holidays there so the hotels don't all have to close in winter. We love going down to the Med in winter. Only the locals are around and the Brits and Scandinavians who winter there.

Hastings is more than just a seaside town. It has an active fishing fleet- so lots of good seafood outlets- and a lively cultural scene. Being on the Channel coast it gets visited by school parties from France and elsewhere.

Yes, we have a few towns very much like that as well. I guess we just like the quieter and sleepier places.

We took a lot of seaside holidays when I was a kid and my grandparents used to live near Brighton and I rather enjoy the gaudiness and noisiness of the British seaside resort.

Oh yes! When I was a kid I loved places like that as well...but now as an old person, I love quiet and sleepy and friendly.

I'll take both- or either.
