Democracy In Action [Oct. 1st, 2017|12:58 pm]

Meanwhile, the Spanish government has decided the best way to stop the Catalans from wanting their independence is to get the police to fire rubber bullets at them. Genius!
I wonder our lot didn't try it with the Scots.

I am against any sort of violence but it is not exactly what you say. Were rubber bullets fired in one or two instances here? Yes. But ...a few do not represent what is really happening...on BOTH sides. There is a constitutional process for segregating from Spain which has  been ignored. Force is not the domain of just one side.

I'll admit I know very little about the situation. I just have a gut reaction to the sight of men in riot gear with guns.

That's the issue. Too many people don't really know. There is a democratic way to hold a segregation referendum here (it's written into the Constitution!) and the leaders of Cataluña ignored that. Of course they'll be screaming repression for a long time to come. Nobody has denied their right to a referendum but just saying I don't like the rules does not work in a democracy. And Spain is a mature democracy.

I'm just angry and upset by all the misinformation on both sides.

There's been very little coverage of the issue in the British media, but that's normal. We are very poorly informed about European politics.
