Storm Aileen [Sep. 13th, 2017|09:45 am]
Tony Grist
Storm Aileen came barrelling across the UK last night. Ailz has found it odd to have her not so very common name in the headlines. She's glad she doesn't have to go into an office this morning and deal with the ribbing.

First thing I did this morning was check that my sunflower was still standing.

I was confused when they said it was called Aileen because my cousin Eileen is spelled with an "E". I wondered how I'd missed all the storms A-D!

Aileen gets called Eileen all the time- and occasionally Elaine.

All these names are, of course, regional variants of Helen :)

A named storm already? The Met Office will be reaching for names ending in X and Z by the end of the winter...

I'm not keen on this naming of storms. It makes small weather events seem bigger and more significant than they are. I'll accept it for tropical hurricanes- like Irma- which have a huge ecological and social impact- but Aileen was just a bit of a blow.

I agree... It seems more self-promotion on the part of the Met Office - "See how vitally important we are!" - than useful forecasting tool.

Oh! So that's the reason for all the windy weather out your way and in central/north Europe.

My sister has started calling Ailz "Stormy".

We got no storm at all here in the Frozen North.

It wasn't really much of a storm, more like a high wind. Giving these things names means we pay them more attention than they merit.
