Cold Callers [Jul. 12th, 2017|01:14 pm]
Tony Grist
It seems to me- from my limited experience- that cold callers are getting desperate. I had one the other week who bounced off my defences and lost his cool and started swearing at me- and one today who told me that if I didn't answer his questions he'd just call me back- which could be construed as a threat. I'd like to think they're getting rattier because more and more people are stonewalling them and the business model they represent is close to collapse. I hope that's the case- because it's a lousy model.

Swearing and implicit threats? Nasty. And it shows just how unregulated cold-calling is... I don't understand why it is still legal in this country.

It would be lovely if it occurred to all these firms that paying people to wind up your potential customer base is perhaps not the wisest of all policies.

I think it's a tactic that's getting old and people are wising up to it and it's getting harder for the callers to get results- hence the increased nastiness.

As our number is listed with the telephone preference service, the only cold calls we get are illegal ones, usually claiming to be from Microsoft, though we're also getting ones that claim to be from BT or other service providers. All of them get short shrift from me.

Unfortunately, this means that I'm extra wary of anyone phoning us up out of the blue. I feel rather embarrassed that I told someone who called claiming to be phoning from our bank that he sounded dodgy. When we received the letter a few days later, it turned he really was phoning from the bank. Ooops!

I give the "Microsoft" ones short shrift too but try to be polite to the others; I don't suppose many of them actually like their work.

I've come close to giving legitimate callers the brush off, but don't think I've actually done it yet- but, then, how would I know for sure?
