Friendly Shouting [Apr. 17th, 2017|09:28 am]
Tony Grist
Is it possible to shout in a friendly manner? People manage it in books but I'm not sure it can be done in real life. I shout a lot at my mother because of her deafness and I don't mean it to sound cross but it always does.

Our neighbours used to manage it in Oldham - it sometimes sounded like world war 3 was about to start and then they'd all laugh and we'd find they were just saying goodnight

I think it has to be symmetric - i.e. more than one person has to be shouting, otherwise it sounds like a harangue. For example, I might shout a cheery greeting from my canal boat to a person walking down the tow-path, who might shout back in kind. But yes, when addressing deaf mothers it's hard not to sound a little querulous.
