Great Aunt Enid's Photo Stash 2 [Feb. 4th, 2017|11:22 am]

More glum Edwardians.

This is the Sanderstead Ladies Hockey Club First XI, 1908-9. Enid is second from the right on the back row. Her sister Elfrida (Elf) is sitting on the ground to the left.

Elf was a star player, described in the report of a match between Kent and Surrey as "hitting hard and true". Enid is commended in the same report for "her telescopic reach".

Elf..lovely nickname! There are a few here with just the hint of a smile.

Elf became a teacher- and never married. I remember her- but not well.

Enid made it to 100. She ran a small gentlewomanly farm, bred dogs and chickens and lived (chastely I believe having had access to her diaries) with a succession of female companions.
He last companion, Doro, was a jolly sort, whereas Enid was rather grand and ladylike.

Yes, I think I recall you talking about them before in your journal. Interesting women!

When I went to PEI I saw pictures of their Women's Hockey team - a long history of such things there.

Hockey used to be the number I team sport for girls in the UK. I don't suppose that's still the case.

I should have mentioned that it was ICE hockey. PEI is very proud of their hockey history, especially its women.

I wouldn't want to meet them coming up an alley...
